Overview

Built in 1865 by Richard Potter as a Gatehouse to Standish House and grounds, and then owned by Lord Sherborne, The Gatehouse is now a fully restored two bedroom* bolthole offering guests a unique staycation experience next door to the owner’s sustainable design studio. The entirety of the space at The Gatehouse has been slowly and carefully crafted in keeping with its listed status, eco-friendly ethos and personal story, to provide something a little more special.

*For couples or solo travellers only requiring one bedroom, the Gatehouse can be booked at a discounted rate (from £125 per night).

Ground Floor

Walking in from the courtyard, guests are greeted by flagstone flooring, vibrant green walls and a charming selection of antiquities – from botany illustrations to ornate cherry wood furniture. To the right of the entry is a compact bathroom painted in a calming marine blue featuring underfloor heating, a generous walk-in shower and Bamford products.

The cosy living room at the end of the hallway has a rustic feel to it, with its glossy wooden panelled floors and locally sourced antique furniture. After a long day of exploring quaint Cotswolds villages, you can sink into the deep blue velvet sofa, and for a quiet read you have a well-curated stash of architecture and gardening books, in homage to the owner’s passion for sustainability and the property’s original occupier – gardener of the Standish House estate.

Tucked away in the corner you’ll find a small kitchenette, equipped with all of the necessities for rustling up breakfast and light bites with local farm shop goodies, including an Everhot Stove and an Air Fryer. You can also help yourself to vegetables and herbs from the garden, or simply take some home with you on departure!

First Floor

Upstairs, there are two snug bedrooms painted in neutral sandy hues and filled with more charming antique features. The master bedroom features a king-size bed, a vintage dressing table and oversized mirror. The second bedrooms is equally cosy with a double bed and small dressing table. Expect crisp linen sheets and squishy mattresses toppers for a restful night’s sleep. We love the pops of colour from the lamps and scatter cushions.

Outside

The south facing courtyard garden is shared with the owner’s landscape design studio who champion sustainability, surrounded by acres of meadows filled with vegetable bed and orchards. Please note that the studio has it’s own separate entrance and is not used on weekends.

There is a small table and chairs outside the front of the house, for you to enjoy morning coffees and breakfasts outside, accompanied by the babbling stream across the country road.

The Gatehouse welcomes children aged five and over. Sadly the property is not suitable for children under five, however little ones under 6 months old are on a request basis. Please enquire with us directly.
