Overview
Built in 1865 by Richard Potter as a Gatehouse to Standish House and grounds, and then owned by Lord Sherborne, The Gatehouse is now a fully restored 2 bedroom bolthole offering guests a unique staycation experience. The entirety of the space has been slowly and carefully crafted in keeping with its listed status and personal story to provide something a little more special and with an eco-friendly ethos.
Ground Floor
Walking in from the gravel courtyard, guests are greeted by flagstone flooring, vibrant bright green walls and a charming selection of antiquities – from botany illustrations to ornate cherry wood furniture. To the right of the entry is a compact bathroom painted in a calming marine blue, providing a fun contrast to the hallway. It features underfloor heating, a generous walk-in shower and comes equipped with Bamford bathroom products.
The cosy living room at the end of the hallway has a rustic feel to it, with its lovely dark wooden flooring, and antique furniture all locally sourced.
After a long day of exploring the nearby Cotswolds villages, the deep blue velvet sofa is the perfect seat to sink into, and for a quiet read you have a well-curated stash of architecture and gardening books, in homage to the owner’s passion for sustainability and the gatehouses’s original occupier – gardener of the Standish House estate.
Tucked away in the corner of the room is a little kitchenette equipped with all of the necessities for light bites, with the Sage Smart Air Fryer providing a contemporary contrast.
First Floor
Walking up the stairs, guests will find two snug bedrooms, painted in a calming sand hue and filled with more of the charming antiquities that make The Gatehouse special. The master bedroom features a king-size bed, a lovely antique dressing table and large mirror. The smaller of the two bedrooms is equally cosy with a double bed and small dressing table. Expect crisp linen sheets and mattresses topped to the heavens for the best night’s sleep. A tasteful splash of colour is provided through the lamps and scatter cushions harmonising with the muted tones in the two bedrooms.
Outside
The south facing, partly sheltered courtyard garden, is shared with an urban and landscape design studio, and is part of 7.5 acres of meadow with orchard and vegetable beds. It is a great little breakfast spot while listening to the babbling stream across the country road.
