3 the square

Overview

3 The Square is nestled within one of the most idyllic Cotswolds villages, where country lanes are lined with perfectly pruned Alice in Wonderland-esque hedgerows and pockets of sweet as can be honey-hued cottages lay in abundance.

It’s one of eight seventeenth century cottages that form the The Square at Upper Slaughter, originally thought to have housed local farm workers and remodelled in the early 1900’s by Sir Edwin Lutyens (a well known country house architect at the time), who enhanced the cottage’s unique layout and original farmhouse features. Now lovingly redesigned by its owners and dressed with stylish and snug interiors, this two bedroom bolthole is perfect for families of four, couples or small groups of friends in search of a quintessential Cotswolds escape.

Ground Floor

The cottage is accessed via the pedestrian gate at the edge of The Square, where a pathed stone pathway will lead you to the front door and into the entrance hall. To your right, you have the stylish sitting room with its plush emerald velvet sofa and feature log burner, and from here, follow the corridor round to the bright, chic country kitchen and dining area, that welcomes you with an elegant palette of warm neutrals and French greys. There’s a lovely large wooden dining table with farmhouse-style chairs, perfect for evenings in and morning brunching, and charming original window features. Off the kitchen, you’ll then find the boot room and laundry room.

First Floor

Upstairs, you have two cosy bedrooms and a family bathroom that sit off the quirky geometric landing space with its characterful sloping roof. One of the bedrooms has a king-size bed and the other a Super-king (that can be made into a twin on request). In these, you can expect locally commissioned artwork and original fireplace features, alongside stylish botanical print curtains that mirror the rural and flourishing surrounding beyond. The luxurious sky-blue family bathroom is complete with a generous bath and overhead rainfall shower.

Outside

At the front of the property and overlooking the Square’s courtyard, is a south-facing outdoor dining set up for four enveloped by garden blooms. The perfect spot for a chilled glass of rosé at golden hour or your morning coffee ritual.

Dogs

3 The Square welcomes one dog for an additional fee of £40 per dog. With country walks from your doorstep and the shallow waters of the River Eye to splash around in, this is a haven for furry friends. Kindly note that dogs are not allowed upstairs or on any of the furniture.

Welcome Hamper

A welcome hamper filled with local goodies will be waiting for you on arrival including milk, butter, eggs, a fresh loaf and a bottle of prosecco.

About Upper Slaughter

Despite the menacing sounding name, ‘Slaughter’ actually derives from the Old English term ‘slough’ meaning ‘wet land’; although a wet land no longer! Upper Slaughter is the peaceful, younger sibling to Lower Slaughter, with a fairytale-like backdrop of rolling Gloucestershire hills and lush green valleys. The delights of Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Kingham are just around the corner and the larger towns of Cheltenham and Cirencester are just a short distance away.

Often used for filming and television productions, the two pretty as can be Slaughters are perched on the banks of the River Eye and can be walked between along a footpath. Within An Area of Outstanding Beauty and just off the Fosse Way, you can expect idyllic countryside scenes and charming pockets of houses that look like they’ve been dunked in butterscotch at every turn. It’s also a haven for foodies, with handfuls of chocolate-box pubs and award-winning restaurants almost guaranteed with whichever path you take.

Transport

The Cotswolds are easily accessed from London and Oxford by car, which will come in handy for exploring the surrounding countryside and local hot spots (detailed driving directions will be provided upon booking). Alternatively, you have Moreton-in-Marsh and Kingham, both with train stations just under 20 minutes away and trains regularly run from Oxford, London and the Midlands.

Parking

There is a reserved car parking space on the road for guests of 3 The Square and there are further public parking spaces in the village if needed.

Check-In & Check-Out

Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is by 10am.

Food & Drink

– Stumble just across the road (literally) to Lords of the Manor, a luxury country hotel with an excellent fine dining restaurant overlooking the gardens, The Atrium. A lovely option for a celebratory dinner; begin with a glass of the Rathfinny rosé and settle in for the night with one of the lavish tasting menus.
– For a more laid-back setting, head to The Slaughters Country Inn in Lower Slaughter, with a menu showcasing lots of delicious Cotswolds produce alongside a wide selection of local ales. They also have a great menu for little ones.
– Just across the stream from here you have The Slaughters Manor House. With an all day lunch and separate evening menu, you can expect dishes like a truffled croque madame or steak au poivre. They also have a cracking cocktail bar and do a top notch afternoon tea.
– In nearby Stow-on-the-Wold you have the excellent nose-to-tail restaurant The Old Butchers and the iconic shop and restaurant at Daylesford Farm.
– In Kingham, there are some cracking gastropubs from The Kingham Plough to The Wild Rabbit.

Things To Do

– The walk from Lower to Upper Slaughter following the River Eye is definitely worth the amble. Parts of the river are nice and shallow; perfect for a paddle on a balmy day. If you fancy something a little more strenuous, this walk joins up with the 14 mile Wardens’ Way between Winchcombe and Bourton-on-the-Water (a 2 hour round trip).
– There are some delightful Cotswolds towns and villages for you to explore and amble through just a stone’s throw from Upper Slaughter, including the lovely Stow-on-the-Wold; a typical Cotswolds market town brimming with bakeries, boutiques and art galleries.
– For golf fanatics, there are courses at Naunton, Burford and Wychwood.
– The National Hunt racing at Stratford-upon-Avon and Cheltenham always makes for an exciting day out. Look out for upcoming fixtures during your stay here.
– And if you fancy exploring the Slaughters on horseback, Bourton Vale Equestrian offers hour-long circular horse rides around Upper and Lower Slaughter, where you can stop for a paddle and pictures in the river.
