Overview
Pack your bags and set off for the Cambrian Mountains – because you won’t want to waste a second at this dreamy countryside retreat. Tucked away among rolling Welsh hills, with ponies roaming in the surrounding fields, this charming red-and-white cottage feels as though it’s been plucked from a world of folklore and fables.
Sleeping up to four guests across two delightful bedrooms, it welcomes dogs too, making it ideal for families, couples or friends seeking a slower pace of life. Expect a wood-fired hot tub, far-reaching views, and a host of local experiences that can be arranged by the owners. A true hidden gem, and one we were almost reluctant to share…
Kitchen, Living & Dining Areas
Originally the farmhouse stable, the kitchen and dining room have been carefully restored to create a warm and welcoming heart of the cottage. Handmade crockery crafted by local potters adorns the shelves, while a generous dining table is perfectly positioned to make the most of the sweeping valley views beyond.
The sitting room is a cosy retreat, centred around a crackling log burner and filled with original features, from exposed beams to flagstone floors. Board games, art supplies, and outdoor games provide entertainment on slower days, though many escapees may find themselves simply gazing out at the ever-changing landscape. The cottage’s west-facing aspect means spectacular sunsets are a regular occurrence, while binoculars by the window seat invite wildlife spotting and stargazing long after dark.
The Bedrooms & Bathrooms
Sleeping up to four guests, Hafod Gwyllt offers two charming bedrooms. Upstairs, beneath original beams and tucked into the eaves, there is a double bedroom, with a freestanding bath positioned for long soaks after days spent exploring the Welsh hills. A separate loo is also located on this floor. On the ground floor, and once the farmhouse cow barn, there is a flexible twin room that can be arranged as a super-king bed, complete with an en-suite walk-in shower room.
As with the rest of the cottage, the bedrooms celebrate the building’s heritage, with original features carefully preserved throughout.
Outside
Perched high above the Ystwyth Valley, the cottage enjoys a wonderfully secluded setting with far-reaching views across the Cambrian Mountains, and enjoys 40 privately owned acres within the historic Hafod Estate. The garden has been designed to make the most of its remarkable position, with a wood-fired hot tub overlooking the hills and an outdoor dining area for soaking up the sunshine.
The front of the cottage is a particular suntrap on warmer days, while the surrounding fields are home to the owners’ three Welsh ponies – Tarzan, Lucky and Peggy – who can often be spotted grazing nearby.
Extra Experiences
The owners are passionate about sharing this special corner of Wales and can arrange a handful of memorable experiences for escapees. Join an expert-led dark skies and night photography session beneath the stars, learn to forage for wild fungi before turning your finds into a delicious meal, or spend time with the local potters who create the handmade crockery used throughout the cottage.
For those seeking relaxation, in-cottage massage and beauty treatments can also be arranged, allowing you to fully embrace the slower pace of life that defines a stay here.
Welcome Hamper
A welcome hamper filled with delicious goodies will be waiting for you on arrival, including a bottle of fizz, homemade Welsh bara brith cake and local preserves.
Children
Mini escapees are well catered for at Hafod Gwyllt, with a solid cot, high chair, and plenty of entertainment including a Toniebox with accompanying Tonies.
Dogs
Up to two medium-sized, well behaved dogs are welcome at Hafod Gwyllt (no puppies under 6 months) for an additional fee of £40 per dog. There is a basket in the kitchen filled with helpful additions including blankets, towels, shampoo, treats, and a water bowl. Kindly note, dogs are not allowed upstairs or on any of the furniture.

The Surroundings
Mid Wales is the sort of place that rewards those willing to venture a little further afield. Often overlooked in favour of better-known corners of the country, it remains entirely unspoilt, with dramatic mountains, wild moorlands, wild swimming spots, quiet beaches, and vast dark skies all waiting to be explored. Add historic landmarks, excellent local food, and a strong sense of place, and you’ll soon see why those who know it tend to keep it to themselves. That said, we wouldn’t blame you for spending much of your stay at the cottage itself.
