Overview
Go off-grid with a stay at this restored, eco-conscious 18th-century barn, tucked into the Cornish hinterland just outside Penzance. Sleeping up to six people across the main house and a separate cabin, it’s ideal for groups of friends and families alike. Just 10 minutes from secluded sandy beaches and cobbled seaside villages, this is Cornwall without the crowds.
Introductory offer: Book a trip to The Carthouse before 13th May and get 10% off. Valid for stays taken throughout 2026 excluding bank holidays and the Christmas and New Year period. Discount is applied automatically at checkout.
Kitchen, Living & Dining Areas
Once a working barn, where horses and carts stood ready for the surrounding fields, The Carthouse now unfolds as a thoughtful balance of old and new. The open-plan living space is grounded by original granite walls and exposed wooden cross beams, alongside softer nods to its coastal location including rattan pendant shades and textured jute rugs.
Industrial-style windows draw in the light, while the modern, fully equipped kitchen – complete with high-quality appliances and a central island – is made for slow mornings over coffee and pastries. There’s a small dining set up as well as a cosy sitting area with two sofas centred around a statement log burner. In colder months, you can expect solar-powered underfloor heating throughout.
In the separate whitewashed cabin, you’ll also find a compact kitchenette.
The Bedrooms & Bathrooms
Inside the main house, there are two double bedrooms, decorated with antique finds and organic linens. The master bedroom has a king-size bed and a freestanding silver bathtub. The second bedroom features a four-poster double bed with a draping canopy. There is a shared bathroom with a shower for these two bedrooms, complete with vibrant coral-hued tiles.
In the separate cabin, you’ll find a third studio bedroom with a king-size bed and an en-suite bathroom with a shower.
The bathrooms are stocked with luxurious products by Commune, alongside deliciously fragrant Verden bath salts.
Outside
Spend afternoons unwinding or evenings dining under the stars in the private garden, and soak up the wild, peaceful surroundings. There is a decked terrace and patio area at the front of the property, and a lawn with a hot tub at the back – this is where the cabin is located, along with its small outdoor seating area. The owner lives next door, but the space feels wonderfully private to you.
Welcome Hamper
A welcome hamper will be waiting for you on arrival filled with local goodies including sourdough, milk, eggs, and a bottle of sparkling wine.
Dogs
The Carthouse is happy to accept up to 2 dogs for an additional fee of £40 per dog. It’s worth noting that the decked garden area is fully enclosed, but the separate lawn garden is not.

The Surroundings
Tucked into the far west of Cornwall, this stretch of coastline feels quietly removed, yet is only a 15-minute drive from Penzance train station. The nearby village of St Buryan has a well-stocked village store, a traditional pub, and a farm shop just up the road. With some of Cornwall’s most striking beaches and a handful of well-loved local spots just a short drive away, it remains something of a hidden pocket of the coast.
